After a breath, I pressed send. “Okay, it’s done.”

Approximately thirty seconds later, Ruby said, “Has he replied yet?”

“Not yet.”

Ruby gave a half-grin, but she had an odd look in her eyes that I couldn’t quite figure out. It was like the look her father made when he was planning something. Something I’d rather not know about. Had I been wrong about Ruby? Had she inherited her father’s darkness?

I had seen no signs of cruelty. She loved cats and all the neighborhood creatures. No, she couldn’t possibly have his darkness. She was too kind, and I didn’t think it was an act.

Perhaps all this business with Allison was twisting me all up. First, Allison’s powerful reaction to Edison and now Ruby. Something wasn’t sitting right with me, but what?

I watched as Ruby trotted back behind the counter. She began pulling out cupcakes and setting them on the counter. “What are you doing?”

“When Liam responds, tell him we have a box of cupcakes for her. We can give her one of each flavor. What do you think?”

That Ruby was innocent enough to think you could buy someone with cupcakes. “I think it’s a great idea.”

Ruby smirked. She was definitely up to something, but I wasn’t sure what. Maybe she saw Allison as an opportunity to get away from us. I knew she wanted more than we’d given her. After raising her in a bubble, she wanted the rest of the world. It was understandable. Maybe she saw Allison as being part of that. If that were true, what was the dread growing inside of me?
